A significant event occurred in March 2009.  Steven Huesing, one of the most charismatic leaders of the Health Care Information Technology “industry” passed away.  Health Care Information as a science is still young enough that most of the early adopters are still alive.  The irony is that while his work is noteworthy, his name is probably not that familiar to you.  It’s for that reason that I’m writing about him and his achievements.  Many years ago, Steve’s leadership caused the creation of the rules for security and confidentiality.  COACH was created when Steve met with likeminded individuals who saw the need for a format for information technology in healthcare. The following is a short eulogy. 

Steven was a good friend and colleague who suffered through the complexities brought on by having a kidney transplant at a relatively young age and a second transplant which he lived with for well over ten years.  Our paths crossed on many occasions and he always was ready with a new idea that challenged the status quo.  Change, the creation and management of Change was uppermost in his mind. 

His leadership in the development of COACH, Canada’s Health Informatics Association and subsequent role operating as Executive Director of IMIA, International Medical Informatics Association, were all done while publishing his own Healthcare IT magazine.  Conversations were always lively with Steve because while a good friend, he always introduced a new idea to extend or support healthcare IT, and that was usually controversial.  Many felt that Steve started his magazine as a platform for extending his ideas, and I think they were right!

Our thoughts go out to the Huesing Family, especially his daughter Elaine who also is a key member of our industry.
